WEENER Workshop |
---|
The Wireless Environment Education and Network Enabled Research workshop will be a tiny introduction on the OpenWRT platform, and a soldering exercise - if I can't find enough adapters for the WRT54Gs.
Up to five WRT54GS's can be provided atm by me, so this will be the targeted platform. After the workshop, you can take it home. |

What kind of sorcery is this?
The Wireless Environment Education and Network Enabled Research workshop, or WEENER workshop in short, will be a workshop about OpenWRT hacking. I will provide a device and a precompiled VoidWRT image I specially compiled for this event.
VoidWRT?
VoidWRT will be an enhanced version of OpenWRT, containing IPv6 support, the SiXXS AICCU client and OpenVPN server software. No web interface will be provided. This platform will be used in the first part of the tutorial to learn how the configuration system works. At the end, the binary image of this OpenWRT distro will be posted on this wiki page.
Workshop flow
0. Make/scrape/design/bring a Power Supply Unit. You'll need 5 to 12V. The device drains about 800-850 milliamps on 5V.
1. Learn how OpenWRT works by exploring the pre-built OpenWRT image on your device.
(I will try to put this in too, but if we're running out of time, we might not do this in this iteration of the workshop - this will be done next time then)
2. Build your own OpenWRT image with your packages built in, from source.
Requirements
A computer which can run Linux, virtualized or non virtualized. I will try to provide a VMware image with the prereqs and source tree in place, but I can't promise that right now.
These packages are required
(ubuntu users can issue sudo apt-get install build-essential subversion git-core libncurses5-dev zlib1g-dev gawk flex quilt
.)
If you have one, a 12V DC power supply that fits a common router. 5V will do too, 9V too. Just not over 12V please, or under 5V.
Make sure you have a SPARE SIXXS tunnel!
We will be playing with IPv6 too.
Limitations
There was a huge interest in this, also in other hackerspaces. If you come, put your name on the list. The first people who put their name on the list, and who comes to the workshop, will get a WRT54GS. (basic specifications ). The price will be €5 for non hackerspace members, and €5 for hackerspace members. People who want to take the device home, can pay €7,5 for it. This money will be used to do a Feed The Hackers. (barbecue, anyone?)
