Idea
An experiment with recycled hard disk platters, which are excellent no-cost reflectors for sun light. A solar cooker is developed by building an array of mirrors to aggregate light to a focal line or point. The energy can either be focused to a cavity or transferred to store the heat elsewhere to drive a generator a Peltier element, or other stuff.
Parts
- Recycled hard-drives platters
- blackboxed cooking cavity
- glass or copper (inox-plated) tubing (250C+ temps!)
- CNC-milled directors for the platters
- possible deformators to create semi-parabolic mirrors, needs extra fabbing
- Extra solar PV-panel for DC-current

Calculus
- Hard disks platters reflective surface measure about:
((95mm-25mm)/2)^2 *PI = 0,001225 * 3,141593 = 0,003848 m^2 = (3.8 x 10-3)
- Solar constant = 1.361 kW/m² wikipedia
- The exact amount of yield to produce is not set yet. Please assist, here depending on the applications: Cooking coffee, frying eggs, powering a peltier element.
Layout
A compact linear fresnel reflector-array is easy to adjust to the earth motion. Packing circles in squares
Tracking
Help with some arduino-project with some suntracking software a stepper-motor and we are all-set. Oh, some wood working is needed, please wheel in some euro-pallet please.
Reflective platter surface deterioratio
- The disk platters normally live in a semi dust-free enclosure. Using them under semi-harsh conditions where heat, weather and PM10 or PM5 conditions is to be discussed. From november 2011 to march 2012 a platter will be actively exposed to the harsh conditions the Antwerp Ring poses to 100.000 living under less-than 500m distance. The disks are dead OK, but the sputtered reflective surface might deteriorate seriously.
- How to measure reflectance properly? Please add your suggestions to the talk page.
